Jerry Nelson, Director of Youth Ministries
 |
Jerry Nelson joined Abiding Savior staff as Director of Youth Ministries in August 2008.
Jerry grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota, where he attended Emmaus Lutheran Church. He learned good Lutheran theology with Pastor Erwin Brandt as his confirmation teacher. He later studied Music Education at the University of Minnesota, and after graduation, taught band, orchestra, and choir in the Bloomington Public Schools for two years. During that time he sensed a call to full time ministry, and took a position as a Minister of Music at a Lutheran Church in Plymouth, MN, leading worship and directing youth and adult choirs.
After thirteen years in the church, he sensed a call to a music and outreach position at the Association Free Lutheran Bible School and Seminary in Minneapolis, where he continued to direct choirs and outreach ministry teams for 17 years. At the Bible School he had the opportunity to work with students that were primarily age 17 to 21. During his tenure there, he received his MA in Music Education from the University of St. Thomas. Jerry took the AFLBS choirs on evangelical mission trips each year across the United States and internationally every five years. The international ministry included trips to Norway, Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Europe.
In the Spring of 2008 brought Jerry to a place where the Lord was calling him to a “new thing” (Isaiah 43:18-19a). He felt called to work with youth and their families and was led to Abiding Savior. Jerry loves to teach the Word of God to every age and is excited to continue his ministry to young people. As Director of Youth Ministry, he works with grades 6-12, overseeing the BWP Wednesday night program, Sunday School, Life Groups and other youth events throughout the year.
He and his wife Terri have three children, Matt, Aaron and Emily, all of whom attended the Association Free Lutheran Bible School.
